Periodontics

Your smile should be infectious, not infected. If you’re not in the habit of going for dental check ups every 6 months, the chances of contracting periodontal disease eventually are much higher. It’s an infection of the tissues that support your teeth, and is classified into 2 major stages – gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is a milder and reversible form of periodontal disease that only affects the gums. But this may lead to periodontitis, the more serious and destructive form of periodontal disease, if not treated. Worse yet, the bacteria that causes periodontitis has also been found to be linked to other medical problems such as heart disease and premature births – medical complications that can result in serious consequences.

Here are some warning signs that may signal a problem:

  • Gums that bleed easily
  • Red, swollen, tender gums
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
  • Persistent bad breath or bad taste
  • Permanent teeth that are loose or separating
  • Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
  • Any change in the fit of partial dentures

It’s possible to have periodontal disease and not have any warning signs. That’s why regular dental check ups are so important. You don’t have to lose teeth to periodontal disease. Just practice good oral hygiene at home, brush and clean between your teeth, eat a balanced diet, and visit us every 6 months for a lifetime of healthy smiles!
